Mother: A Model for God’s Love

By Pastor Vam Foung Vang

2 Timothy 1:5 says, “I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”

1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared May 9, 1914 as the first national Mother’s Day. This was possible after a long battle of promotion by Anna Jarvis, who observed her mother Ann Jarvis working, trying to unify families that were separated by the Civil War. Ann Jarvis started Mother’s Friendship Clubs to administered to sick and injured Union and Confederate soldiers in multiple cities to ease the tensions after the war. After the passing of Ann, Anna first promoted a Mother’s Day from their Methodist church to honor her mother.

As we celebrated Mother’s Day, I am reminded of 2 Timothy 1:5 “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”

Anna continued the work her mother set down and wanted to honor the hard work that her mother gave to heal a broken nation. She served alongside her mother and that faith and care was passed on to her.

We see in 2 Timothy that Paul recognizes the importance of Timothy’s mother and how she instilled that same faith into him.

As mothers, you need to understand that your children are given to you to raise into faithful children of God. Mothers have the responsibility of instilling faith to the future generations and the future of our nation. Your children will value what you value, and you are the model of God’s love for these little ones.

Reflections: Can you name a mother in your life that has modeled God’s love for you? How do you model to the younger generations a living faith?
