The Gift of Christmas
By: Dr. Joseph Yang
Bible passage: Isaiah 9: 6 (NIV)
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Summary:
Christmas is a time of joy, love, and reflection as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Isaiah’s prophecy in chapter 9:6 reminds us that this child born in Bethlehem was no ordinary baby. He came as God’s greatest gift to humanity, bringing hope and salvation to all who believe. Each name given to Jesus in this passage reveals His divine nature and His purpose for coming into the world.
He is our Wonderful Counselor, guiding us with wisdom when we are lost. He is Mighty God, powerful to save and mighty in battle against sin and death. He is our Everlasting Father, showing us the love, care, and protection of a perfect parent. And He is the Prince of Peace, offering reconciliation with God and inner peace to every heart that receives Him.
Christmas is not merely about lights, gifts, and gatherings—it is a celebration of God’s ultimate act of love: sending His Son to save us and draw us into a relationship with Him.
Reflection:
As we approach this Christmas season, take a moment to reflect on what the birth of Jesus means to you personally. In the busyness of holiday preparations, it is easy to lose sight of the true reason for the season. Jesus did not come just to be admired in a nativity scene but to change our lives forever.
- How has Jesus been a Wonderful Counselor to you this year? Have you sought His wisdom in your decisions and struggles?
- In what areas of your life do you need to trust Him as Mighty God?
- Do you experience His love and comfort as Everlasting Father? Are you resting in His presence?
- Where in your heart or relationships do you need His peace as the Prince of Peace?
Take this time to thank God for the gift of Jesus and surrender any worries, fears, or doubts into His capable hands. Let Christmas remind you of the great hope and joy we have in Him.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ. In this season of Christmas, help me to remember the true reason for our celebration. Jesus, You are my Wonderful Counselor, guiding me when I am unsure; my Mighty God, who gives me strength in my weakness; my Everlasting Father, who loves me unconditionally; and my Prince of Peace, calming my troubled heart. I surrender my life to You again today. Fill me with Your hope, joy, and peace this Christmas, and help me to share the light of Your love with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
