Love As Christ Loves

John 13:34-35, ESV
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
On the eve of his crucifixion, Jesus gathered with his disciples and imparted a new commandment: to love one another as he had loved them. This was not simply an encouragement; it was a direct command. The commandment was “new” not because the concept of love was unfamiliar — God had always instructed his people to love — but due to the elevated standard of love that Jesus established. He did not merely request ordinary love; he called his disciples to embody his kind of love — selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional.
Consider the nature of Jesus’ love. He humbly washed his disciples’ feet, a task typically assigned to servants. He exhibited patience with their shortcomings and offered forgiveness during moments of doubt or failure. He expressed his love by sacrificing his life for them and ultimately for all of us. The love Jesus commands transcend mere emotions; it embodies a commitment to serve, forgive, and care for others, even in challenging times.
Jesus emphasized that love would be the defining characteristic of his disciples. It was not their knowledge, religious rituals, or good deeds that the world would recognize them, but rather their sacrificial love for one another. When we love as Jesus loves, others will see Christ reflected in us. Our love serves as a testimony to His presence in our lives. In a world teeming with division, selfishness, and hatred, love exemplifies Christ’s spirit and stands out as a powerful witness to the Gospel.
Reflection
- Examine Your Love: Is your love for others selfless and sacrificial, or is it conditional? Ask God to help you love as Jesus loves.
- Show Love in Action: Find practical ways to love others today through encouragement, forgiveness, acts of kindness, or simply listening.
- Be a Witness Through Love: Let your love reflect Christ. When people see how you love, may them see Christ in you.
