Walking in Discernment

By: Dr. Joseph Yang

Bible passage: 1 Thessalonians 5: 21-22 (NIV)

“But test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.”

Summary:

Discernment is the ability to distinguish between truth and falsehood, right and wrong, or God’s will and human desires. In a world filled with competing voices and ideologies, discernment equips believers to navigate life’s complexities while staying rooted in God’s truth. The Apostle Paul, in 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22, emphasizes the importance of testing everything and holding on to what aligns with God’s will. He further instructs believers to avoid every form of evil, reflecting a life dedicated to holiness and obedience. Discernment isn’t about judgmentalism; it’s about seeking God’s wisdom to make righteous choices.

Reflection:

  1. Testing Everything: Paul’s call to “test everything” highlights the need for critical examination of what we hear, see, and believe. In today’s information age, we are inundated with messages from media, culture, and even well-meaning people. How do we test these things? By aligning them with God’s Word. Hebrews 4:12 reminds us that God’s Word is “alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword,” capable of judging our thoughts and attitudes. Are we filtering our decisions and beliefs through the lens of Scripture?
  2. Holding Fast to What Is Good: Discernment involves clinging to what is good—what is true, noble, and praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8). It requires effort and intentionality to reject what is harmful or misleading. This isn’t merely a passive avoidance of evil but an active pursuit of righteousness. What areas in your life need a realignment with God’s goodness?
  3. Abstaining from Evil: Avoiding every form of evil doesn’t mean living in fear but exercising wisdom and self-control. Evil can often disguise itself as something harmless or even beneficial. Discernment empowers us to identify and steer clear of these deceptive traps. Ephesians 5:15-16 encourages us to “be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity.” Are there habits or relationships in your life that you need to reevaluate?
  4. The Role of the Holy Spirit: Discernment isn’t achieved through human effort alone; it is a gift cultivated through intimacy with the Holy Spirit. John 16:13 promises that the Spirit of truth will guide us into all truth. Are you seeking the Spirit’s guidance in your daily decisions?

Application:

  • Pray for Discernment: Regularly ask God for wisdom and clarity in making decisions (James 1:5).
  • Immerse Yourself in Scripture: Consistent study of God’s Word sharpens your ability to discern truth.
  • Seek Godly Counsel: Surround yourself with mature believers who can provide wisdom and accountability.
  • Practice Listening: In moments of decision, pause to seek God’s direction rather than acting impulsively.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for being the source of all wisdom and truth. In a world full of distractions and confusion, help us to walk in discernment. Teach us to test everything against Your Word, to hold fast to what is good, and to avoid every form of evil. Holy Spirit, guide our hearts and minds so that our choices honor You. Give us courage to pursue righteousness and to turn away from anything that pulls us away from Your purpose. We trust You to lead us in all truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
