The Fear of the Lord Is the Beginning of Wisdom
By Xh. Cher Cha Yang
Proverbs 1:7, NIV
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
The book of Proverbs is part of the wisdom literature in the Bible, attributed primarily to King Solomon. This verse establishes a fundamental principle: wisdom begins with a reverential fear of God. The Hebrew word for “fear” does not imply terror but rather awe, reverence, and respect for God. It is the kind of fear that recognizes His authority, sovereignty, and holiness. This verse contrasts those who seek wisdom with those who reject it. It describes two types of people: the wise, who revere God and seek instruction, and fools, who despise wisdom and guidance. In biblical terms, a “fool” is not merely someone lacking intelligence but one who is morally and spiritually deficient, choosing self-reliance over God’s guidance.
Wisdom is more than knowledge; it is the ability to apply knowledge rightly. Proverbs 1:7 teaches that wisdom does not start with human experience or intellectual pursuits but with a proper relationship with God (Psalm 111:10; Job 28:28). The phrase “beginning of wisdom” suggests that a proper attitude toward God is the foundation upon which all wisdom is built. Without a reverential relationship with God, human wisdom is incomplete and flawed.
The latter part of Proverbs 1:7 cautions that “fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Those who turn away from God’s wisdom do not merely lack knowledge; they actively resist correction and guidance. This refusal results in detrimental outcomes, including misguided decisions, moral decline, and estrangement from God. When individuals dismiss divine wisdom, they frequently depend on their flawed perceptions, which fosters arrogance, moral blindness, and ultimately leads to destruction (Proverbs 16:18).
The New Testament reveals that true wisdom is found in Jesus Christ. Paul writes in Colossians 2:3 that “in [Christ] are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Jesus embodies divine wisdom, and through a relationship with Him, believers receive proper understanding and guidance. Furthermore, 1 Corinthians 1:24 calls Jesus “the power of God and the wisdom of God.” By following Christ’s teachings and example, we align ourselves with God’s wisdom and grow in spiritual understanding.
Proverbs 1:7 is a profound truth that remains relevant today. True wisdom starts with a reverential fear of the Lord and leads to a life guided by His instruction. Those who seek God’s wisdom will find fulfillment, while those who reject it will suffer the consequences of their folly. By cultivating a heart that reveres God, studying His Word, seeking wise counsel, and living according to His wisdom, we align ourselves with His divine purpose. In doing so, we experience the blessings of wisdom and avoid the pitfalls of foolishness. Ultimately, wisdom is not just about making good choices—it is about living in right relationship with God and walking in His truth.
