Wisdom from Above
By: Dr. Joseph Yang
Bible passage: James 3: 17 (NIV)
“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”
Summary:
Wisdom is one of the most valuable gifts we can seek in our spiritual journey. The world often defines wisdom as intelligence, knowledge, or the ability to make successful decisions, but biblical wisdom goes beyond that. James 3:17 contrasts earthly wisdom, which is often self-serving and prideful, with the wisdom that comes from God, which is pure, peaceful, gentle, and full of mercy. This wisdom leads to righteousness and unity, guiding us in truth and love.
Reflection:
True wisdom is not measured by our intellect or achievements but by our character and actions. Godly wisdom produces humility, peace, and love rather than arrogance and division. When we rely on our own understanding, we often make choices that serve our own interests rather than glorify God. However, when we seek God’s wisdom, our hearts are transformed to reflect His love and righteousness. How do we discern whether we are walking in godly wisdom? We must examine our attitudes and motivations—are we promoting peace, showing mercy, and being sincere in our dealings with others? The fruit of our wisdom is a clear indicator of its source.
Application:
- Seek wisdom through prayer – Ask God daily for wisdom as Solomon did (James 1:5).
- Read and meditate on Scripture – The Bible is the ultimate source of God’s wisdom (Psalm 119:105).
- Practice humility – A wise heart acknowledges dependence on God rather than personal knowledge (Proverbs 3:5-6).
- Demonstrate peace and gentleness – Wisdom should be evident in our relationships, bringing unity rather than discord (Matthew 5:9).
- Bear good fruit – Our actions should reflect wisdom through kindness, patience, and sincerity (Galatians 5:22-23).
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, You are the source of all true wisdom. I come before You today, seeking the wisdom that is from above—wisdom that is pure, peaceable, gentle, and full of mercy. Help me to walk in humility and discernment, making choices that reflect Your love and righteousness. Guide my thoughts, words, and actions so that they bring honor to You. Fill my heart with understanding and my life with the fruits of wisdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
