The Power of the Resurrection

By: Dr. Joseph Yang

Bible passage:  Matthew 28:5-7 (NIV)

“The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: “He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.” Now I have told you.’”

Summary:

Easter is the pinnacle of the Christian faith, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which signifies victory over sin and death. In the passage from Matthew, we witness the moment the angel reassures the women at the tomb, emphasizing that Jesus has risen just as He promised. This event is not just a miraculous occurrence; it is the foundation of our hope as believers. The resurrection assures us of eternal life and the power of God to transform our lives.

As we reflect on the events leading up to Easter—the suffering, the crucifixion, and the sorrow of Jesus’ followers—we are reminded of the immense love and grace God has for us. The empty tomb serves as a powerful symbol of renewal, reflecting the promise of new beginnings in Christ.

Reflection:

The resurrection invites us to examine our own lives and the transformative power of faith. Just as the women were instructed to not be afraid, we too are called to confront our fears and doubts. The resurrection is a reminder that God is actively involved in our lives, even in our darkest moments.

What fears or struggles are holding you back from fully embracing the hope of the resurrection? Perhaps it’s doubt about your worthiness, or the weight of past mistakes. Remember, the message of Easter is that through Christ, we are made new. Reflect on the areas of your life that need renewal.

In Romans 6:4, Paul writes, “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” This new life is a call to rise above our past and live boldly for Christ.

Application:

Easter is not just a day of celebration; it is a call to action. As believers, we are commissioned to share the message of the resurrection with others. The angel’s instruction to the women to go and tell the disciples is a model for us. Who in your life needs to hear about the hope found in Christ?

Consider ways to embody the resurrection in your daily life. This could be through acts of kindness, sharing your testimony, or simply being present for someone in need. In a world filled with despair, we have the opportunity to be messengers of hope.

Additionally, make it a point to cultivate a deeper relationship with God. Spend time in prayer and Scripture, asking Him to reveal areas where you can grow and serve. Easter is a reminder that God is always at work, and He desires to use us for His purposes.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the incredible gift of Your Son, Jesus, and the power of His resurrection. Help us to grasp the significance of this day and to live in the light of Your love and grace. Teach us to confront our fears and to embrace the new life You offer. Empower us to share the hope of the resurrection with those around us, reflecting Your love in a world that desperately needs it. May we always remember the promise of Easter in our hearts. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
